On 9 April 2026, Axios reported that OpenAI is "finalising a product with advanced cybersecurity capabilities" that it plans to release "exclusively to a select group of companies." No public model name. No release date. No partner list. The scoop is deliberately thin on detail because OpenAI has not formally announced anything.
What the scoop does tell us is the channel: the new OpenAI cybersecurity model will ship through OpenAI's existing Trusted Access for Cyber program. That program isn't new; it launched on 5 February 2026 alongside GPT-5.3-Codex. What's new is that OpenAI now has a frontier model it considers too cyber-capable for the general API, and Trusted Access for Cyber is how it intends to gate it.
If you try to map this to version numbers, OpenAI's public release cadence ran GPT-5.2-Codex in January, GPT-5.3-Codex in February, and GPT-5.4 in March. A "GPT-5.5-class" cyber model would sit right at the next step on that ladder.
That framing is our extrapolation, not Axios's. The scoop itself names no version. Whatever the internal name turns out to be, the OpenAI cybersecurity model at the centre of the scoop is distinct from anything you can call through the normal API today.

What Trusted Access for Cyber Actually Is
Trusted Access for Cyber is an identity-based access framework OpenAI launched on 5 February 2026 alongside GPT-5.3-Codex. It lets verified individuals, enterprise teams, and invite-only security researchers use OpenAI's most cyber-capable models for defensive work, while blocking abusive uses like malware creation and unauthorised testing. The Three Tiers
- Individual users verify identity through a dedicated cyber access portal.
- Enterprise teams request access in bulk through an OpenAI account representative.
- Security researchers apply to an invite-only program for more permissive models. This is the tier the forthcoming OpenAI cybersecurity model almost certainly lands in.
OpenAI has committed $10 million in API credits to the associated Cybersecurity Grant Program, targeting teams with a proven track record of identifying and remediating vulnerabilities in open source software and critical infrastructure.
What You Can't Use It For
The framework explicitly prohibits data exfiltration, malware creation or deployment, and unauthorised testing. These aren't just terms of service. They're the conditions under which OpenAI is willing to let a cyber-capable model out of the general-API sandbox at all. The prohibitions are the whole point of the program.
Two Products Already Shipped, One Direction
Trusted Access for Cyber isn't the only thing OpenAI has shipped in this space. Two other releases give the forthcoming OpenAI cybersecurity model its context:
- GPT-5.3-Codex is, per OpenAI's own Preparedness Framework, the first OpenAI model to hit "high" on the cybersecurity capability axis. That rating is the internal tripwire that makes a model a candidate for Trusted Access rather than general availability.
- Codex Security, formerly known as Aardvark, is an autonomous security research agent now in research preview for ChatGPT Enterprise, Business, and Edu customers. According to OpenAI, it caught 92% of seeded vulnerabilities in golden-repository benchmarks and has already found at least 10 CVEs across open source projects including OpenSSH, GnuTLS, PHP, and Chromium.
The Axios scoop is about something else: a frontier model sitting behind Trusted Access, distinct from the Codex Security agent that's already available to paying ChatGPT customers. When both frontier labs lock their most cyber-capable models behind restricted access, the gap between the offense an attacker will eventually buy on the open-weight market and the defense an SME can actually deploy widens. Your attackers, eventually, won't need to be.

The Honest Read: What This Scoop Does Not Change
Three things are worth stating plainly so nobody walks away from this post with the wrong takeaway.
First, you aren't going to get Trusted Access for Cyber. A 25-person recruiting firm or a mid-market logistics operator isn't on the partner list for the forthcoming OpenAI cybersecurity model, and that's fine. You don't need to be on the list; you need your agent to live in a vault.
Second, your defensive posture is still your responsibility. No frontier lab is going to defend your AI agent for you. Anthropic and OpenAI are restricting their cyber-capable models because those models are dangerous, not because the restriction protects your infrastructure downstream.
Third, the vault playbook doesn't get lighter because OpenAI validated it. It gets non-negotiable.
